Flexible time has been built into the agenda to enjoy the onsite amenities and beautiful lakeshore.

This retreat is being designed for and with trustees and staff of family foundations. View agenda

If you have ideas for programming or speakers you would like to engage with during the retreat, please contact Andrea Judd-Shurmur at ajudd@michiganfoundations.org.

Youth Programming Ages 6-17
Youth programming will provide opportunities for next-generation family members to learn more about philanthropy alongside their peers. Participants will discuss how they can engage in and develop as leaders through philanthropy and their respective foundations.

Youth participants ages 16 and above are invited to participate in the youth grantmaking sessions or the retreat’s adult programming. Each family should determine which program will be best for their young adults.

Youth programming is not designed for children under 6; please note that child care services are not available through CMF. Registered children under 5 are invited to attend meals and social activities at no cost.

You will have the option to register your youth attendee(s) during an Adult registration.

Speakers
Kara Carlisle

Kara Carlisle

President & CEO
Ford Family Foundation

Kara’s whole career has been place-based, with chapters in southern California, rural New Mexico, Minnesota, and now in Oregon and Siskiyou County, California. Starting out in nonprofits, she served in numerous roles – writing grants, leading communications, human resources, evaluation and more. Much of her work focused on nonprofit sustainability, the mediation of economic and cultural conflict, and on seeing and understanding how communities effect change. Joining philanthropy, Kara held fast to building community and getting things done at a time when many funders sought the next evolution of service, strategy and civic engagement. She authored the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s first guide to place-based philanthropy and dove into deep listening with community to align strategy with greater impact at the McKnight Foundation. Part of what drew Kara to The Ford Family Foundation is its commitment to place – and to rural places, which are largely overlooked by national philanthropy. Kara believes that Oregon and Siskiyou have stories and solutions to inform those across our nation who have deep hunger for meaningful, community-driven change. Kara holds a master’s in business administration from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, as well as a master of divinity degree in Urban Studies and Education from Claremont School of Theology. She earned her bachelor’s at Anderson University in Indiana. She serves on the boards of Foundations for a Better Oregon, Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement and the National Center for Family Philanthropy.

Kelly Nowlin

Kelly Nowlin

Principal
KDN Philanthropy Consulting

Kelly Nowlin is a fifth-generation Andrus family member who has been actively engaged in her family’s philanthropy for the last two decades. She recently served on the board of the Surdna Foundation, a family-led social justice foundation started by her great, great grandfather, John Emory Andrus, over 100 years ago. She chaired the Andrus Family Philanthropy Program and the AFP Committee which is responsible for outreach and engagement of nearly 500 Andrus family members. Kelly also helped guide the Centennial anniversary of Surdna, shining a light on our partners and advancing initiatives to continue our pursuit of social justice. Prior to her years at Surdna, Kelly was a founding board member of the Andrus Family Fund (AFF), a program launched by Surdna in 2000 as a grantmaking fund for fifth-generation family members. Alongside seven cousins, they developed program areas, governance policies, bylaws, mission, strategic vision, and committees of the board of this $4MM fund. Kelly served as Vice Chair, then Co-Chair for four of her seven-year term. As a philanthropic advisor, Kelly develops strategies for family foundations and nonprofits and speaks regularly around the country on topics in philanthropy, including next-generation engagement, social justice, racial equity, power and privilege, impact and evaluation, foundation culture and strategic communications. She also serves on the boards of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) and the National Center for Family Philanthropy (NCFP) and part of the 2020 and 2021 Class of Fellows for NCFP.
