About the Organization

Forgotten Harvest was started in 1990 by Dr. Nancy Fishman. The mission of the organization is to relieve hunger by preventing nutritious food waste. It is estimated that 555,000 people across the tri-county area struggled to secure food in 2022. Forgotten Harvest has rescued millions of pounds of food from nearly 560 food donor locations annually. We support over 220 emergency food providers. Forgotten Harvest is on the road six days a week with a fleet of 50 trucks that have distributed food throughout a 2,000 mile area.


Position Description

This position is consistent with Forgotten Harvest mission and vision and will proactively research, develop, and implement public policy strategies and actions to support federal, state, and local public policies that address food security.


Responsibilities
  • Monitors, provides research, and proactively alerts and advises Executive Leadership Team (ELT) on emerging and current public policy issues, legislation, and regulation. 
  • Defines, recommends, and leads strategy and actions to address public policy opportunities (emerging and current developments) with professionalism, equity, respect, and service for the community and its many diverse members and opinions. 
  • Leads FH’s actions with policymakers, regulators, stakeholders, and FH’s sector to address these developments. 
  • Champions research to find new avenues of government support and growth; cultivates stakeholders to identify programs providing support; applies for and stewards avenues of support and growth; and protects current sources of support. 
  • Leads FH’s presence, reputation, and relationships among and across federal, state, and local policy leaders and staffs among legislative and regulatory bodies, and among formal and ad hoc public policy-related organizations and convenings.
  •  Leads and recommends strategic plan priorities and, where appropriate, leads/manages/stewards actions defined in the strategic plan.
  • Provides stewardship for internal compliance with government requirements and best practices via leadership, mentoring, guidance, and encouragement.  Leads internal and external communication across ELT, FH departments, and outside FH on FH’s public policy issues and programs – understanding different perspectives.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and education. Advanced degree or its equivalent experience preferred.
  • Five to ten years’ effective experience, including leadership roles, in public policy strategy and implementation, and in government affairs across varied constituencies.
  • Understands public policy / government affairs roles at all levels and branches of government and their functions; and is committed to legal, ethical, and appropriate interactions with public sector officials for effective public policy strategy, actions, assessment, and effectiveness.
  • Extensive experience in leadership, research, development, implementation, mentorship, and stewardship of public policy strategy; cross-sector project collaboration and community-relations project management; and public sector resource grant pursuit and administration.
  • Respected professional record of ethical, constructive, respectful working interactions with people across broad array of backgrounds, motivations, and goals – internal and external to FH.
  • Track record of excellence as team leader and effective team member.
  • Excellent program management skills for leading, convening, stewarding in internal and external roles.
  • Excellent collaborative leadership, and interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent, effective research and analytical skills addressing complex issues and solutions.
  • Demonstrated willingness to initiate and support leadership, peers, and other colleagues.
