Two CMF members are partnering to support students’ success academically while centering their well-being, addressing challenges and barriers students may face and connecting them with resources to achieve their academic goals.

Masco Corporation, a CMF corporate foundation member, is supporting the Schoolcraft College Foundation, a CMF member and a comprehensive, open-door, community-based college, in establishing the Masco Student Success Fund.

According to the Schoolcraft College Foundation, the Masco Student Success Fund aims to help students overcome various challenges and barriers that may affect their academic performance and well-being.

Sue Sabo, director of communications and corporate giving at Masco Corporation, shared that the program offers support to students beyond tuition and books, like addressing transportation challenges.

“It could include a student sharing, ‘I am a single mother, and I'm taking classes, and I'm doing really well, but I’m having car trouble, and I can't get to school,’ and we provide support for them to address their transportation needs. There are many different barriers to getting to class, and we want to support students in addressing any of those challenges,” Sabo said.

According to Schoolcraft, the Masco Student Success Fund is a comprehensive and holistic approach that empowers Schoolcraft College to provide equitable and inclusive support to students, especially those who face barriers due to lack of access or exposure to opportunities.

The fund helps students achieve their academic goals, enhance their personal and professional development, and improve their quality of life.

The Masco Student Success Fund offers wrap-around services to students who need assistance, including:

  • Support Services: tutoring, mentoring, counseling and career guidance.
  • Transportation: bus passes, gas cards or car repairs.
  • Child Care: vouchers, subsidies or referrals.
  • Food Insecurity: meal plans, food pantry access or grocery cards.
  • Academic, health, socio-emotional, familial, financial, and logistical support: scholarships, emergency funds, personal care items or legal aid.

Schoolcraft shared that the Masco Student Success Fund is managed by the Hinkle Center, a resource center for students that provides a variety of programs and services to support their success and well-being.

The Hinkle Center staff will work closely with students to identify their needs, connect them with the appropriate resources and monitor their progress.

Sabo shared that the partnership with Schoolcraft has been organic because Masco’s corporate headquarters and the Schoolcraft campus are located in the same community.

“We meet with Schoolcraft on an annual basis and discuss the programs that they’re launching or current programs that need additional support. Since we moved our corporate headquarters to the Schoolcraft campus in 2017, we've made it a priority to support the college, both through financial donations and by opening our doors to the students to learn more about our corporation’s work and opportunities. We are their neighbors, so it’s important to us to support them,” Sabo said.
