Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y, a nonprofit cultural and community center in New York. In the seven years since, it has grown to be a global movement, focused primarily on digital messaging and online promotion. This year's event is slated for December 3, 2019.

The initial idea was simple—get people excited about supporting the causes they care out the same way they get excited about Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals. In a 2018 interview with FastCompany, Asha Curran, chief innovation officer, 92nd Street Y, said, “The very basic premise of it was, 'Could we turn people’s attention from two days of consuming to a day of giving?' Could there be a sort of counterpoint to Black Friday and Cyber Monday that brought us back to what is really a very, very long American tradition of giving and generosity, but for this age of social media and shifting behaviors?”

With 200 local movements happening in the United States and 60 country campaigns planned, Giving Tuesday, which is now its own organization, boasts this as the biggest generosity movement of all time. According to the Giving Tuesday website, in seven years, Giving Tuesday activities have raised more than $1 billion online in the U.S. alone.

Most CMF members that we reached out to for this article have social media posts planned for the day to promote community-wide giving. Here’s a look at a few with campaigns designed around Giving Tuesday:

Battle Creek Community Foundation has integrated Giving Tuesday messaging into its year-end giving campaign. The campaign themed "Together We Can Do Great Work" is featured on a satellite website. BCCF is using traditional television, radio and billboard advertising to help drive traffic to the site. “We hope to remind people that it’s Giving Tuesday and also invite them to give support our work here at the Foundation,” said Clovis Bordeaux, marketing manager, Battle Creek Community Foundation.

The Community Foundation of Greater Flint is once again focusing its Giving Tuesday call to action on its Flint Kids Fund. The fund is dedicated to addressing the long-term health and developmental needs of children exposed to lead from drinking the city's water. The Flint Kids Fund has been part of the Giving Tuesday campaign since 2016. A match of up to $50,000 is being offered for gifts made to the Fund through the Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation.

The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan is once again providing an online platform, marketing tools and a measurement system to help nonprofits in Alcona, Alpena, Cheboygan, Crawford, Iosco, Montmorency, Ogemaw, Oscoda and Presque Isle Counties raise up giving in their region. Around 65 organizations have joined the campaign this year. Last year, the effort raised over $156,000 in 24 hours.
