The social media landscape is rapidly changing with new platforms and tools emerging on what seems to be a daily basis. It presents exciting and creative opportunities for Foundations seeking to enhance communication channels with a wide range of constituents. Join Roberta King, Vice President, PR & Marketing and Meredith Fennema, PR & Marketing Specialist Grand Rapids Community Foundation, as we take a tour of current social media options and how they might apply to your communication goals and needs. She will also provide examples of how other foundations are using social media to deliver targeted and compelling messages to inform and influence their constituents.


Roberta King, VP Public Relations and Marketing, Grand Rapids Community Foundation
Roberta F. King serves as the Vice President for PR and Marketing. She has worked her entire career in the fields of Community Relations, Public Relations and Marketing. She began her career at the American Red Cross, worked at the Grand Rapids Art Museum and at Mercy General Health Partners. She earned her Accreditation in Public Relations designation in 1999. She has a Bachelor’s in Journalism from Valparaiso University and a Master’s in Communication from Grand Valley State University.

Roberta serves with the senior leadership team in determining the strategic direction for the organization and carrying out growth and impact strategies through communication research, planning and tactics. She is responsible for media relations, social media, this website and printed publications. She also serves as a mentor to college interns who work in PR at the Foundation.

She is President of the board of Well House in Grand Rapids. She is also a reporter for The Rapidian, Grand Rapids' citizen journalism site. She served on the steering committee of CommA, the professional association of community foundation communications professionals.

Meredith Fennema, Public Relations & Marketing Specialist,Grand Rapids Community Foundation
Meredith joined the Grand Rapids Community Foundation as the PR & Marketing Specialist October 2013. In this role, Meredith works closely with Roberta King to advance foundation communication efforts. This includes writing for the website and printed publications, maintaining social media platforms, and coordinating events.  

Meredith joins the Grand Rapids Community Foundation following her time as the Public Relations & Social Media Manager for ArtPrize. Previously, she managed Bing Goei’s write-in campaign for 76th State Representative and carried out communications strategies in Nairobi, Kenya, for the fair trade organization Venture Imports.  Meredith received a bachelor’s degree in Business Communications and Political Science from Calvin College.

Meredith serves on the Baxter Neighborhood Association Board and volunteers with Gays In Faith Together (G.I.F.T.). She enjoys hosting neighborhood pancake breakfasts, showing off her very amateur basketball skills, and backpacking and CouchSurfing in places near and far.
