The Intergenerational Toolkit: Bridging the Generations, A Guide for Family Foundations
For the first time in history, there are four distinct generations in the workplace and a fifth generation is part of growing families. Each generation brings its own set of values, beliefs, life experiences and attitudes to shared endeavors. The Council of Michigan Foundations developed The Intergenerational Toolkit: Bridging the Generations, A Guide for Family Foundations in response to member focus groups who identified a need for resources to help engage all generations in the family’s work. This 63 page softcover publication not only helps families understand the varied perspectives from each generation but also offers tips, examples and stories from members on how they are building bridges between the generations in their families. The toolkit also includes a section of carefully designed exercises to identify shared values and to explore common interests, improve communications to help build high quality connections between family members and create more inclusive family foundation meetings.
"Effectively engaging the next generation is one of the biggest challenges facing family foundations, and if we address this challenge in informed, innovative ways we will see family giving create impacts far beyond our previous experience – and perhaps even our expectations. This toolkit is a wonderful resource for doing just that. It summarizes in very accessible ways the latest research on the philanthropic identities of different generations, and it provides a host of practical tips and exercises that can be easily and quickly adapted to diverse family situations and needs. I predict we will all be using this toolkit for a long time." - Michael Moody, PhD, Frey Foundation Chair for Family Philanthropy, Johnson Center for Philanthropy, GVSU
