Discretionary Grants

Publication date:

Discretionary Grants are those distributed at the discretion of authorized individuals, usually board members or senior staff, who are given the opportunity to direct a small portion of funds from the foundation to a charitable nonprofit of their choice. Total discretionary giving should not exceed 10 - 20% of grants with the remainder dedicated to the core mission of the foundation. Typically, most foundations become interested in discretionary grants when the second and third generations join the board. This sample document includes detailed discussion and information, discretionary grant request form and a sample grant acknowledgement.
