College Positive Communities

Publication date:

The College Positive Community Toolkit was created to teach youth grantmakers in Michigan about the education crisis in our state and provide them with an opportunity to make a positive impact by creating and encouraging a college positive community in their own backyard.

The toolkit includes a video introducing the data behind the education crisis and why educational attainment is so important to our communities, a customizable PowerPoint and a detailed facilitator’s guide for use with your YAC.

“A world-class education is the single most important factor in determining not just whether our kids can compete for the best jobs but whether America can out-compete countries around the world. ... That’s why we’re working together to put an outstanding education within reach for every child.” - President Barack Obama, July 18, 2011

The Council of Michigan Foundations would like to thank the Kresge Foundation for their support in providing youth grantmakers with the opportunity for matching grants and the development of this toolkit. This curriculum was modeled after Michigan Campus Compact’s College Positive Mentoring Toolkit. A special thanks to Brandy Johnson of Michigan College Access Network and Michelle Snitgen of King-Chavez-Parks Initiative for their thoughtful review and input. In addition, CMF would like to think the Youth Advisory Council advisors for not only their input into the curriculum, but their continued leadership and dedication to youth grantmaking, without them this initiative would not be possible.
