A memorial service was held Friday in Grand Rapids for Margaret “Peggy” Thompson, MD, a long-time trustee of The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation and secretary of The Harry A. and Margaret D. Towsley Foundation. Peggy also served on CMF's Board of Trustees and CMF's Advisory Cabinet.

Peggy served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine until she retired last year. She co-authored numerous medical articles and presentations regarding medical education and co-authored a chapter on nutrition in a leading Family Practice textbook. She received Outstanding Faculty awards and was a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Born in Midland, Peggy served on the boards of the foundations established by her great grandparents and grandparents until her passing.

“During Peggy’s 23 years of service as a Trustee for The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, she was known as an active listener, thoughtful leader, inspiring teacher, lifelong learner and trusted friend,” Jenee Velasquez, executive director of The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation and CMF Trustee shared. “One of her most powerful gifts was developing people. Peggy made you feel that you were important and that your ideas had merit. She believed in us more than we believed in ourselves, and she helped us be better. She and her family are in our prayers.”

Peggy served in many leadership roles, including at the Culver Educational Foundation, Clark Retirement Community, the Grand Rapids Symphony, Mid-Michigan Health and her church.
