A Policy Update: Michigan’s Charitable Tax Credit

Several CMF members, CMF and partner organizations have worked to support bipartisan legislation that would restore the Michigan Charitable Tax Credit through conversations and letters written to lawmakers. The Michigan House of Representatives passed a Senate Bill last week on a bipartisan vote that would reinstate the state Charitable Tax Credit.

The Senate Bill was returned to the Senate for enrollment and will then be sent to Governor Gretchen Whitmer to sign into law. CMF is continuing our advocacy efforts to ensure the bill moves forward. We are asking our community foundation members to call Governor Whitmer’s office to encourage her to sign the legislation.

Reinstating Michigan’s Charitable Tax Credit unlocks opportunities by incentivizing families of all income levels to make charitable donations to endowed funds across the state, strengthening our nonprofits.

The tax credit will encourage more local giving, help create a culture of giving among first-time donors and empower our local nonprofits to do even more of the vital work they do to support strong and prosperous communities across the state.
