The Board of Trustees has announced Mike Goorhouse, current Vice President at the Community Foundation, as the next President/CEO of the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area.
“I am thrilled to share that Mike Goorhouse has accepted our invitation to serve as the President/CEO of the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area (CFHZ). The Board has been working closely with Mike for more than two years as our Vice President, and we are most impressed by his commitment to CFHZ and his ability to inspire others to join our mission,” says Sue Den Herder, Chair of the Board of Trustees.
When Janet DeYoung, current President/CEO informed the Board of her desire to retire in mid-2014, the Board conducted a rigorous internal interview process, and is “unanimous in its decision that Mike is the right person to lead CFHZ now and into the future.” The Board feels that “CFHZ’s donors, nonprofit partners, and the broader community will benefit from Mike’s vision for how CFHZ can continue to grow the community’s endowment, serve donors, and lead community change,” says Sue Den Herder.
Mike is a life-long Holland resident and has been invested in CFHZ for the last 13 years, serving on committees and task forces, and he has held a staff leadership role as Vice President since January of 2012. As Vice President, Mike has directed CFHZ’s development, donor service, and communications. In 2012, he led a development strategy that resulted in the largest fundraising year in the organization’s 63-year history, and in 2013, doubled the amount of gifts to CFHZ’s community endowment.
He has spent almost ten years working professionally in philanthropy, and is a well-respected and recognized leader in the philanthropic and nonprofit fields locally, regionally, and nationally. “We are fortunate to have someone of Mike’s caliber so committed to our community and our foundation,” says Sue Den Herder.
Prior to joining the CFHZ staff, he served as Director of Membership for the Council of Michigan Foundations. During his seven years at the Council, he worked with more than 400 community, corporate, and family foundations across the state of Michigan.
Mike holds a Master’s of Public Administration in Nonprofit Management from Grand Valley State University and is well versed in financial management from his graduate coursework at GVSU’s Seidman College of Business. He attended Calvin College for his undergraduate studies. Mike is a Certified Gift Planning Associate from the Crescendo Gift College and a Certified Fundraising Manager from Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy.
“Ultimately it is his ability to lead and serve, combined with a strong technical knowledge of charitable giving and the nonprofit sector, that make him the perfect fit to be our next President/CEO,” notes Sue Den Herder.
Mike and Janet are working closely with the Board of Trustees to ensure that the transition will be a smooth one for both the Foundation and the community. Mike will begin his new leadership role on April 15th, and Janet will remain on staff as an advisor through the month of May.
Janet is “looking forward to slowing down and spending extra time with family members during some special passages in their lives” and has great confidence in her successor.
“I have had the privilege of working with Mike Goorhouse for the last four years on Board Committees and as staff. He is a dedicated and gifted leader. Philanthropy isn’t just what Mike does for a living, it’s who he is as a person and it’s how he lives his life. I have great confidence in his ability to lead the Foundation into the future,” says Janet DeYoung.
Community members can meet and hear Mike at CFHZ’s upcoming annual luncheon on Friday, May 23rd, at 11:30am at the Haworth Inn and Conference Center in Holland. Ticket cost is $20. At the event, Mike will share updates on CFHZ’s work in the community as well as plans for the future. For further details about the May 23 luncheon, to RSVP, or for more information regarding Mike, contact Nicole Paquette, Communications Associate, at [email protected], or 616-994-8854.
The Board of Trustees wishes to thank the community for their past, current, and future support of the Community Foundation. “We have been blessed with great staff leadership from Janet DeYoung and Bill Vanderbilt, and we look forward to continued impactful growth with Mike Goorhouse as our President/CEO,” says Sue Den Herder.
