Each year, Learning to Give (LTG), an endowed program of CMF, works with a summer Teacher in Residence (TIR) through the support of CMF member the McGregor Fund.

For 10 weeks in the summer, one Detroit-area teacher helps develop resources, make connections with Wayne County educators and nonprofits and guide the direction of philanthropic education.

LTG is currently seeking its next TIR for summer 2023 and is accepting applications through March 1.

LTG helps advance the skills, knowledge and actions of philanthropy and community engagement through literature, service, film and video, activity and lesson guides as well as by highlighting stories and key resources related to current events.

The TIR applies their area of professional interest toward helping other Wayne County classrooms connect to their community through the development of philanthropy and service-learning lesson plans, community building activities, toolkits and more.

Last summer’s TIR, Erica Saville, a social worker in Allen Park Public Schools, focused on cultural competency and youth awareness of accessibility and inclusion.

Saville worked to develop an Inclusive Communities toolkit of resources that could be utilized by schools, community groups, youth advisory councils (YACs) and more that empowers these groups to focus on inclusion in their spaces.

“My hope for this toolkit is for any person to use this toolkit as a tangible item to apply to their environment to create a more inclusive community,” Saville said.

The toolkit includes lessons and activities, a cultural competence guide, community resources, literature guides and more.

“We worked hard to create as many tools as possible for anyone to begin facilitating this work. It’s not exclusive to a certain age group or demographic, it’s meant to be used by as many people as possible,” Saville said.

As CMF reported, LTG’s 2021 TIR focused on building out resources around culturally affirming social-emotional learning (SEL) for social justice

We encourage you to share this opportunity with your networks. Applications can be found on the LTG website and are being accepted through March 1.
