The Council of Michigan Foundations supports members every step of the way towards building an impact investing practice at their organization.
We have served as a national leader developing the practice across the country and throughout the state.
The Council of Michigan Foundations has been at the forefront of this emerging field since 2013 working in close partnership with Mission Investors Exchange and other colleagues to ensure the development of best practices, policy, education and to facilitate the use of impact investing when appropriate. Impact investing directly supports our mission to grow the impact of Michigan philanthropy.
Essential to the growth of practice across the state, the board-led Impact Investing Committee, comprised of experienced CMF leaders, guides the impact investing direction and programming for members. To discover opportunities for field building and learning, we assessed the current system by conducting a formal statewide ecosystem landscape scan and needs assessment of our members. Demonstrating our long-term commitment, we developed and are implementing a HUB model (see graphic below) to convene, collaborate and connect members with others to learn and engage in impact investing.
We're here to support our members every step of the way.
Conceptually, appropriate use of impact investing makes good sense in the philanthropic sector; practically, however, the field of impact investing still has real barriers to entry. CMF works with individual members and our impact investing committee to overcome these barriers and ease the entry into impact investing for foundations of all sizes.
Understanding that members need both general and customized support, we responded with the appointment of our first-ever Impact Investing Expert-in-Residence, giving members the opportunity to get targeted advice from experts for their impact investing programs.
We have also been working to advance the HUB model, strengthening all parts of the ecosystem and working to make it easier to implement an impact investing strategy. Additionally, we launched the Investing for Impact: Michigan Collaborative fund to continue unleashing the power of impact investing across the country and throughout the state.
