Andy Carroll, senior advisor, Exponent Philanthropy

Andy advises foundations in the areas of leadership, advocacy, and catalytic philanthropy. He works to empower more foundations and donors to leverage their unique position and assets to engage communities and catalyze change on important issues. Andy has an MBA from the University of Michigan Business School and 30 years of experience in research, training, and program development.

Joy Folkedal, senior project manager of governance programs, BoardSource

Joy Folkedal is a “boomerang” BoardSource employee. Now a senior project manager of governance programs, she previously served as a BoardSource consultant and the director of training. She is passionate about building better nonprofit boards and just keeps returning to the BoardSource fold. As senior manager of governance programs, Joy develops consulting and training curriculum and resources for BoardSource clients and projects. She also supports BoardSource’s Ask-the-Expert member benefit by answering governance questions and directing members to the appropriate BoardSource resources.

Brittany Kienker, knowledge insights expert in residence, Council of Michigan Foundations

Dr. Brittany Kienker is Principal and Owner of Kienker Consulting LLC and Knowledge Insights Expert in Residence at CMF. Brittany brings more than 10 years of experience in foundations, nonprofits and higher education. Brittany leads Ask CMF, answering hundreds of questions every year from grantmaking organizations across the state of Michigan and beyond.  Brittany has served as both a practitioner and scholar of philanthropy. She has played an integral role in strategic and master planning initiatives, leadership transitions, organizational restructuring, and implementation of best practices in philanthropy.

Jennifer M. Oertel, impact investing expert in residence, Council of Michigan Foundations

With a background in securities law, private equity and mergers & acquisitions, Jennifer utilizes her corporate law and governance skills to assist family and corporate foundations, community foundations, public charities, regional associations, trade and labor associations, chambers of commerce, religious organizations and other tax-exempt organizations as well as impact investors, impact funds, and social enterprises, in all aspects of their business.
