Join your fellow family foundations on the shores of Lake Huron on Mackinac Island at Mission Point Resort for an interactive, fun, educational, and relaxing retreat! Within a retreat theme, the program committee designed breakout sessions based on the results of the evaluations that family foundation members completed during the fourth quarter of 2018 and the first quarter of 2019. Retreat attendees will walk away with tools to address some of the challenges that they face on a daily basis in the world of philanthropy. Draft Agenda
Family Foundation Governance Policies
Have questions about governance policies for your family foundation? Join your fellow family foundation members, staff and family, for an interactive session about governance policies. At this session, David Thoms, a family foundation member and an attorney, will provide a general overview of best practices related to the development and implementation of governance policies for foundations. After the overview, you will have a chance to draft governance policies that can be applied as soon as you return to your family foundation.
Still have questions that need answers? We’ll forward your questions to Dr. Brittany Kienker who serves as the lead researcher for Ask CMF, a technical assistance service of the Council of Michigan Foundations.
Building Empathy & Understanding to Engage Multiple Generations in Family Philanthropy
Learn about multi-generation engagement as one of your fellow CMF member family foundation members shares their experience. This interactive session will guide participants through multi-generation engagement exercises developed by the consulting firm 21/64, as well as providing a practical list of reading materials and resources for you to take back to your own foundations. All of the resources and activities highlighted will work to build empathy and understanding for an enhanced experience working across generations. This session will be facilitated by Chelsea Landry, a CMF family foundation member and a program partner at the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation.
Write the Vision, Make it Plain: Vision Board Party
Family foundation members will engage in an interactive vision board session. During this session, members will have an opportunity to work with their family foundation's family and staff to develop a vision board that reflects where they want to see their family foundation in 5 years. Family foundation members will leave this session with a tool (vision board) that will engage multiple generations beyond the retreat. Session attendees will have the opportunity to present their foundation’s vision board.
Youth Philanthropy 101
The Family Foundation Retreat youth session will be a time for youth to learn more about philanthropy with their peers and the many aspects of it. The youth will discuss how they can be a part of the world of philanthropy, and how to develop as a leader through it and their respective family foundations.
