Great Lakes Community Foundations Environmental Collaborative

In 1996, the Great Lakes Community Foundation Environmental Collaborative was launched with funds provided by the Charles Stewart Mott and Joyce foundations and the Great Lakes Protection Fund.

More than $1.1 million was granted through 2000 to help start, support and contribute to environmental projects in local Great Lakes communities. Eighteen community foundations located on the shores of the Great Lakes learned through their participation that:

  1. donors were supportive of and created environmental endowments;
  2. partnerships and collaboration with government agencies and neighboring community foundations leveraged more funds;
  3. technical assistance to community foundations was critical to their success; and
  4. learning of current opportunities and audiences and hooking up with experienced partners in communities proved crucial to the collaborative successes.
